July 22, 2014 - DIGICEL FIJI INVESTS FJ$70m IN MAJOR EXPANSION OF ITS HIGH SPEED DATA NETWORK

Digicel Fiji has announced the largest investment since the operator launched in 2008 and promises the largest 4G  network in the country

Digicel Fiji confirmed today an investment of FJ$70 million to expand and upgrade its high speed data network – this being the most significant investment since the operator launched in 2008.  Digicel says that the investment will deliver Fiji’s largest 4G network as well as expanding the existing network to nationwide 3G+ coverage.

In making the announcement at the Grand Pacific Hotel, CEO Darren McLean stated that Digicel plans to change the market dynamics and provide customers with the fastest mobile internet experience in Fiji. He emphasised that this investment will provide the platform to deliver new data services and Fiji’s best data experience to mobile and business solutions customers across the country with faster speeds and greater reliability

“Customers are demanding more of our data network each month so we have made a big decision to enable all of our towers across the country with high speed 3G+ data capability.  In addition to this we are also building the nation’s largest 4G network in the main centres of Fiji.  This means even higher wireless internet speeds of around 20 Mbps in the key population areas.”

“Our customers want faster speeds in more places so they will benefit enormously from this network upgrade.  Digicel has invested over FJ$200 million since we started operations here on October 2008.  The needs of our customers have evolved at a rapid rate and with our reputation for network reliability and coverage we are positioned exceptionally well to deliver on those needs,” added Mr. McLean.

“Digicel’s build of the country’s largest and newest 4G network will result in the most advanced mobile network in the region.  As well as providing the best internet experience to mobile customers, the expanded network will enable new Cloud data services as well as introducing a world-class experience for our Tourism industry through our managed Wi-Fi services.”

In announcing the network investment Mr. McLean acknowledged the strong support of the Fiji Government in creating the conditions for a progressive telecoms environment in the country.  “We are fortunate to benefit from operating in a very forward thinking environment where there is an appetite for innovation.  This environment has enabled Digicel to introduce some advanced products.  The removal of duty on smart phones and network equipment are evidence of this. Our Business Solutions and Unwired services really push the boundaries of what can be achieved in Fiji when you set out to innovate for customers.”

Digicel confirmed that the network upgrade is already well advanced with Lautoka now under full 3G+ coverage with towns being added each day.  This phase of the upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of August.

Mr. McLean also stated that Digicel will introduce a new range of smartphones and smart devices with complimentary data for customers to avail of the latest technology with superior internet and promised that customers can also look forward to a new range of daily, weekly and monthly data bundles with added value.

“The next phase of the Digicel story is our 4G expansion which is equally as exciting.  We will announce details on the roll out of Fiji’s largest 4G network over the coming weeks” McLean concluded.
