August 6, 2014 - DIGICEL THROWS ITS SUPPORT BEHIND THE ICT CLUSTER INITIATIVE

The interest behind the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Cluster initiative has grown momentum in the last couple of months, attracting start-up businesses and entrepreneurs.

And one company that has thrown its support behind this European Union funded initiative is Papua New Guinea’s leading telecommunications service provider, Digicel.

In a recent meeting at Digicel’s Learning Centre in Port Moresby, a steering committee was formed to start the planning process for the creation of an ICT Incubator in PNG.

Digicel’s Head of ICT Business Solutions in the Pacific, Gary Cobain, said the creation of an ICT Incubator is sure to boost the ICT sector in the region.

“The proposed ICT Incubator is intended to provide maturation services such as seed capital, business advice and assistance to start-up ICT businesses and entrepreneurs with the aim of accelerating their growth. This initiative is a way forward in building PNG to become the leading ICT hub for innovation and development in the Pacific region of which Digicel is proud to be involved in,” Cobain said.

Digicel will assist the ICT Cluster Initiative by making available its newly-built Learning Centre facility as a venue for meetings and dialogue.

Paula Norris, Team Leader of the project that has been funded by BizClim, commended Digicel for their support towards the ICT Cluster Initiative.

“The response, creativity and commitment shown by both the private sector and government to this initiative have been overwhelming. There is huge opportunity for PNG talent to make their mark in the ICT sector; not only in PNG, but in the pacific region. All ICT start-up businesses and entrepreneurs in Port Moresby are welcome to attend meetings on the first Tuesday of every month at the Digicel Learning Centre,” Norris said.

The EU cluster initiative is a first of its kind in PNG and Digicel is committed to assist in making this initiative work for the country.
