May 23, 2014 - K20m STATE CONTRACT WITH DIGICEL PNG TO RESULT IN 59 NEW COMMUNICATION TOWERS ACROSS 4 REGIONS

The Government’s award of a K20m contract to Digicel PNG to carry out a rural communications project will see 59 new communication towers built across the four regions of Papua New Guinea, extending Digicel services to an additional 500,000 people.

Digicel PNG CEO John Mangos said the project will target areas that are commercially unattractive and do not have any form of telecommunication services.

“A total of 13 companies were invited to bid for the project and Digicel was successful due to its superior experience and commercial offer,” Mangos said.

Mangos said the 59 sites under the Government’s rural communication project will supplement Digicel PNG’s project discovery programme that’s currently in progress and should see an additional 367 new sites by the end of October.

Digicel has invested over K1.7 billion in PNG since 2007 while maintaining the fundamental principle to bring affordable first world mobile communications to all Papua New Guineans to fulfil the basic human right of accessibility to communication technology.

The telecommunications company aims to extend its network reach from 75 percent to 95 percent of PNG by the end of the year.
